I photograph Asian communities in British Columbia and Washington State a lot, trying to show how their cultures are both retained and modified into a hybrid Asian-Canadian or Asian-American identity. The challenge with folkloric events like this meeting of the Northwest Chinese Cultural Association in Bellingham, WA, is to get beyond focusing on just the colorful and exotic costumes and try to catch a moment that shows something a little deeper and more personal. Does this picture of a mother admonishing one of her children succeed?
