The 2007 Writers Guild of America Strike took place from November 2007 to Feb 2008 lasting 100 days. The economic impact on the City of Los Angeles is still being felt even to this day. On the outside the general public may have assumed the writers were primary elite upper class greedy workers bend on squeezing more money out of the studios. However during the three months I spend on this self assignment I developed a better understand of all the parties involved in this bitter dispute. At the end their were no clear winners as each party had paid a major price.
This photo essay allowed me to employ all my creative skills as a producer, reporter, still photographer, and editor. The toughest part of the assignment was working solo and having to decide when to shoot stills and when to record audio without compromising either. In the end I created a custom photo chest harness which allowed me to carry the camera gear as well as sound equipment at all time and rapidly switch back and forth. It helped to be in good shape when carrying around 20-30 pounds of equipment on my shoulders for hours on end. FYI for those who are interested the photo harness was a combination of the products available from thinktankphoto.
Photojournalism is one of the topics I personally enjoy covering as a photographer. Currently I am based in Los Angeles, California.
