In the Light of Darkness: A Photographer’s Journey After 9/11
By Kate Brooks

“In this extraordinary haunting book of images by Kate Brooks, we are shown a world so violently askew as
to leave no room for such everyday concepts as innocence or youth or beauty. In the best journalistic
tradition, the author has documented contemporary history in the making, and has performed a rare
public service by doing so. At the same time, because the raw, painful stuff of the post 9/11 decade also
became her own coming-of-age experience, one feels that Brooks may have paid too high a personal
price. For all of that, In The Light of Darkness is as unsettling as it is commendable.” – Jon Lee Anderson, staff writer The New Yorker

“…the story of a brave and persistent female journalist who took risks to bring all of us with her on her
extraordinary journey. More than once she is told ‘this is no place for a woman…why don’t you find
another job.’ Fortunately, it never stopped her journey.” –Lyse Doucet, BBC World News presenter & special correspondent

New York, NY, October 13, 2011—At the age of 23, immediately following the Twin Tower attacks, Kate Brooks moved to Pakistan to photograph the impact of U.S. foreign policy on civilian populations in the region.

It was the start of a ten-year odyssey covering world-changing events, from the failure to capture Osama bin Laden in the mountains of Tora Bora to the American invasion of Iraq, to life in Iran, Gaza, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt and Libya.

Kate Brooks’ photographs have been published in TIME, Newsweek, The New Yorker, Smithsonian, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. She has received numerous awards and recognitions including POYi, Lucie Awards, PDN 30, Communication Arts, American Photography, and TIME Picture of the Year. The book interweaves a selection of images with a series of personal essays chronicling her journey from 9/11 to the Arab uprisings in the spring of 2011.

This is her first book.

Contest and Open Gallery Call to Bring Focused Attention to Mobile Photography & Art

TORONTO, ON – September 19, 2011 — The Mobile Photo Awards inc. today announced a competition designed to celebrate the explosive growth of cell-phone photography and art. The photo contest is also an open call for a traveling gallery exhibit featuring the winners of 25 categories.

The exhibit will visit a minimum of three prominent galleries in North America including a month long engagement at San Francisco’s prestigious ArtHaus gallery in April of 2012. Submissions will be accepted from September 24 through November 30, 2011. To enter, photographers must first shoot and process their images on any mobile phone and upload their photos at www.mobilephotoawards.com. Submission fees are $20 for 3 images and $30 for 5. The first 100 entrants will be able to choose a free iPhone photo app from a list of a dozen of the most popular photo apps used today including MacPhun’s FX Photo Studio. One lucky winner will receive a grand prize of a $500 Apple Store gift card while winners in all 25 categories will receive pro memberships and an online portfolio courtesy of the popular photo sharing site 500px.com. In addition, MacPhun will be giving away versions of their desktop photo editing software to 20 winners. All 25 category winners will receive a $50 itunes gift card, a 12×16 archival fine art print via Fotomoto, and inclusion on the gallery tour.

“Thanks to the advancements in lenses and image sensors for mobile phones, and the eco-system of developers who have created photo processing applications, the creativity of mobile photography knows no bounds,” said Daniel Berman, founder of the Mobile Photo Awards and a noted mobile photographer known as Reservoir_Dan. “With this competition and open gallery call we now give mobile photographers and artists the chance to take that creativity even further and show the art world and public just how inspiring these images can be. We’re excited to share the unique opportunity and exposure that this contest will give to the participants.”

Entries will be judged based on originality, creativity, and adherence to the contest theme. The jury is comprised of 15 of today’s most celebrated mobile photographers. Says Berman, “…The truth is that the most creative and honored mobile photographers understand that the medium is somewhat different than traditional photography. Mobile photographers work within the limitations of the tool to achieve images that transcend the medium. Those who understand those limitations are the ones whose work is consistently celebrated, put on exhibit and published in newspapers and magazines. Our jury is comprised of folks who work the medium everyday, who participate in the beta-testing of apps, who promote the art-form tirelessly with lectures, presentations, books and articles. These are some of the best mobile photographers and they are the ones best suited to judge the images.” The jury includes such widely published and award winning mobile photographers as Sion Fullana, Aik Beng Chia, Robert-Paul Jansen, Jennifer Bracewell and Carlein van der Beek. For a complete list of the jury please visit www.mobilephotoawards.com

Each photo entered may be tagged in up to three categories. The categories for the competition include such traditional photographic genres as Landscapes, Self-Portraits, and Street Photography as well as uniquely modern areas such as Digital Art and software enhanced Abstractions.

A shortlist of category winners will be announced in Mid-November and the grand prize winner the first week of December.

For more information please contact Daniel Berman at dan@mobilephotoawards.com or Jennifer Bracewell at jen@mobilephotoawards.com

###

The Mobile Photo Awards were founded to promote and harness the global phenomenon of mobile, or cell- phone, photography and art. The awards are committed to presenting the art-form in galleries and exhibits and are designed to celebrate and bring more attention to the creatives working in the medium.

United States, September 26, 2011 – LUCEO is excited to announce the grand opening of its new store, simply named, LUCEO STORE.

More than just a place to shop, the LUCEO STORE is the next step in our effort to assert more creative control over the production and distribution of our members’ work. This endeavor includes the creation of LUCEO PRESS, our in-house publishing arm; LUCEO STORE, a retail store for our collective works; and The LUCEO Print Gallery, a specially curated body of work by our members housed within the LUCEO STORE.

One of the founding principles of LUCEO is the idea of working together as well as creating extended communities of support for photographers. The LUCEO STORE is a natural extension of this belief. All net sales return to our general account, part of which goes to fund the LUCEO Project Fund and the LUCEO Student Project Award as well as our contributions to KickStarter, Emphas.is and Flattr.

In short, the profit from LUCEO STORE supports both the project work contained within, and the photographic community at large.

The LUCEO STORE will feature a diverse array of creative works: limited edition and one-of-a-kind art and artifacts created by our members; books, magazines and show catalogues published by LUCEO PRESS; unique gifts and merchandise; as well as our new Print Gallery, which will feature both limited and standard edition prints.

The store can be easily accessed at www.store.luceoimages.com as well as from the Store tab located on the LUCEO web site.

Many of you may have heard about FOCUSED, the photography project whose aim it is to create an amazing body of work by laying the more modern technology aside to rely on the photographer’s instinct and senses. The project is the brainchild of photojournalists Chip Litherland and Melissa Lyttle.

They are running a crowd-funding campaign to raise funds for this incredibly unique project.

Please take the time to read about the project below (reprinted from www.focusedproject.org) and consider supporting their vision.

Donations can be made at http://www.indiegogo.com/focused.

You can also tweet the project with the pre-made tweet (copy and paste):

Help <s>@</s>focusedproject send film cameras around the globe challenging photojournalists with only 1 click of the shutter. http://igg.me/p/38796?a=226169&i=twtr

From FocusedProject.org:

One camera. One click. One moment.

In an age where digital photography, the Internet, and motor drives have accelerated the process of image-making, the thought, vision and construction of the decisive moment gets lost in the rush. FOCUSED will bring a diverse group of photojournalists from across the world together one frame at a time towards a common goal: to rely more on our senses than technology.

One roll of film will hold thousands of miles of travel with photo subjects as diverse as the areas they are sent. Frame by frame, the viewer will get a glimpse of the thought process behind making one singular, thoughtful image.

The Project

Five fully manual 35mm cameras will be pre-loaded with a single roll of film and packed into five separate camera bags. The bags will be shipped overnight across the world from one photojournalist to the next – one in a small town in the middle of the U.S., another among relief efforts in a natural disaster zone, or working the White House press pool. Each photojournalist will get only one click of the shutter.

Just one click.

Photojournalists will document their photos not only on film, but in hand-written journal entries with quotes and technical specs from each situation. Journal entries will be scanned and published alongside the images on the website along with any future gallery showings and publications.

All cameras, film canisters, and notebooks will be retained as a historical record of the project and be used in future gallery showings and print publications.

The Benefit

This is an unprecedented opportunity for hundreds of photojournalists to work together. In addition, all of the money raised through unused donations, print sales, book sales, etc., will go to fund youth photography programs across the globe. FOCUSED has partnered with Critical Exposure in Washington DC, The AjA Project in San Diego, Through the Eyes of Hope in Rwanda, and Fundacion Ph15 in Argentina to help build their wonderful programs teaching photography to underprivileged youth.

We have to admit it has been a while since we have updated The37thFrame.org. But this redesign signals our rebirth.

We are using a slightly modified design of the Workaholic Pro theme from our friends at Graphpaperpress.com. We think it provides a cleaner display and all of the enhancements that come with their themes will make life a lot easier for us to keep things organized and updated.

As always, please feel free to send us links and press releases that spotlight great photojournalism on the Web.

We are removing advertising from the site in order to make the viewing experience as enjoyable as possible. This of course will end the limited income that was generated from the advertisements and used to maintain the site.

We are going to experiment with individual reader sponsorship. We refuse to charge any kind of subscription fee for our site. Instead, we will leave it up to you to decide what our service is worth to you.

Your voluntary support will help us keep the site updated and filled with content that you find interesting and compelling.

The amount of your contribution is completely up to you. We suggest that it be based on your opinion of how much you enjoy The37thFrame and what you can afford.

Thank you in advance for your support.

If you write fiction, then you are not a journalist – although, many people might believe that mainstream media has moved more toward sensationalism than to the truth to gain ratings. Journalism is in trouble, if this is how this writing genre is depicted today. But, educators are seeking to turn the genre’s reputation around to a more reputable yet still exciting stance. This movement is reflected in many free online courses and in entire Websites dedicated to journalism ethics, editing and new media.

The following list of top 50 free open courseware classes for journalists includes classes offered by college and universities. But, it also includes entire Websites sponsored by nonprofit foundations and colleges, which are dedicated to teaching readers about journalism. This list is categorized and listed alphabetically by course name or Web site name within those categories, and the sponsoring college or foundation is listed after each description.

On January 12, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit outside of the capital of Haiti, causing widespread destruction to homes, hospitals, schools, government buildings, roads, and lives. Emergency responses from the U.S. Department of State, the American Red Cross, Mercy Corps, and others have been quick, but we need your immediate support to provide food, shelter, and other relief supplies. As the UN’s Special Envoy to Haiti, President Clinton is asking everyone to give what you can to help the people of Haiti respond and recover from this disaster.
