Natan Dvir was raised in Israel and regularly exposed to strong religious, social and political beliefs and ideas from an early age. He says the regionʼs history combined with the volatile political situation today, result in a complex and intense reality in which people emphatically and publicly express themselves.

In his essay Belief, Dvir explores the various sides of how people practice their beliefs, the places it brings them to and the scenes in which they take part. He has documented religious ceremonies, political events and situations of conflict throughout Israel. He says that the photographs in this project are direct examinations of the public as a whole yet focus on individuals and their experiences as well.

The above text was paraphrased from his description of the essay.

View more from this project on his website at www.natandvir.com under the Projects menu.

Photojournalist Amanda Lucidon’s work-in progress on how LGBT couples in the United States are dealing with the problems that the Defense of Marriage Act incurs on them is now featured on American-Journal.org.

The Legal Stranger Project offers an intimate look at the struggles that same-sex couples face as they attempt to navigate the convoluted legal system for parental rights, immigration status, inheritance, health care and survivor benefits. The project reveals the real consequences of the Defense of Marriage Act, under which the federal government recognizes same-sex couples merely as “legal strangers.”

American-Journal spotlights just one of these stories.

Russian born Diana Markosian, a freelance photojournalist and multimedia producer working out of Russia and the former Soviet Union, has a great set of images on her portfolio site about the areas around the Chernobyl nuclear plant.

Normally we do not feature work unless there is a direct link to it, but we thought this was worthwhile. If the story is not the first you see when going to her site, you can find it in the drop-down menu under portfolios.

You can see the essay on her website at www.dianamarkosian.com.
