Photojournalist Charlie Mahoney’s work on Catalonia’s only remaining active bullfighting ring in Northeastern Spain is exceptional. The ring held its last bullfight on September 25, 2011. Charlie is a member of Prime Collective.

Andrea Morales essay, Extracted Dreams, Implanted Realities, an examination of girls growing up in southeast Ohio is featured on American-Journal.org. The project won TIME Magazine’s 2011 inaugural Next Generation Photography Contest. Student photographers were invited to submit a portfolio for review by TIME’s editors. Morales won the top prize of $2,500 and a portfolio review with the magazine’s photo editors.

Natan Dvir was raised in Israel and regularly exposed to strong religious, social and political beliefs and ideas from an early age. He says the regionʼs history combined with the volatile political situation today, result in a complex and intense reality in which people emphatically and publicly express themselves.

In his essay Belief, Dvir explores the various sides of how people practice their beliefs, the places it brings them to and the scenes in which they take part. He has documented religious ceremonies, political events and situations of conflict throughout Israel. He says that the photographs in this project are direct examinations of the public as a whole yet focus on individuals and their experiences as well.

Paris based Baptiste Giroudon’s essay “Working With Democracy” is featured on BURN Magazine.

His project, which he says is “a photographic research of the concept of Democracy”, intends to show where and how in the globalized world, the concept of democracy can be “understood, reclaimed and put forward.”

I am not sure if the images fits this grand mission, but there are certainly some fine images here.

Photojournalist Amanda Lucidon’s work-in progress on how LGBT couples in the United States are dealing with the problems that the Defense of Marriage Act incurs on them is now featured on American-Journal.org.

The Legal Stranger Project offers an intimate look at the struggles that same-sex couples face as they attempt to navigate the convoluted legal system for parental rights, immigration status, inheritance, health care and survivor benefits. The project reveals the real consequences of the Defense of Marriage Act, under which the federal government recognizes same-sex couples merely as “legal strangers.”

Russian born Diana Markosian, a freelance photojournalist and multimedia producer working out of Russia and the former Soviet Union, has a great set of images on her portfolio site about the areas around the Chernobyl nuclear plant.
